Frequently asked questions about the glossary
What is ITAD?
ITAD stands for IT Asset Disposition, the secure and documented retirement of IT hardware. This includes pickup, certified data erasure, resale or refurbishment and, if necessary, proper recycling.
Who is this glossary intended for?
For everyone who deals with retired IT: IT management, data protection officers, purchasing, the finance department, and sustainability managers. The entries explain technical terms in plain language.
Do the entries replace legal or tax advice?
No. The entries on law and taxes give an understandable overview. For your individual case, please consult your legal or tax advisor.
What topics does the IT glossary cover?
The glossary explains more than 230 terms in twelve topics. They range from data protection and law, information security, erasure methods, and data carrier destruction via storage technology, mobile devices, and secure logistics to ITAD and remarketing, refurbishment, disposal, sustainability and ESG, and IT finance.
What is the difference between data erasure, destruction, and disposal?
With data erasure, data is removed in such a way that it cannot be recovered, and the device remains usable. With destruction, the data carrier is physically destroyed. Disposal treats the device as electronic waste and requires its own records.
