Android Zero-Touch-Registrierung
In brief
Android zero-touch enrollment is a Google process for Android Enterprise with which company smartphones and tablets are automatically integrated into the company's device management when first switched on. The reseller registers the devices with the company in advance for this. Before sale, a device must be removed from the zero-touch configuration, otherwise it will register with the old company again even for the new owner.
How zero-touch works
Android Enterprise is Google's program for business use of Android. With zero-touch, an authorized reseller assigns the purchased devices to the company's account via their IMEI or serial number. The company links them to a configuration for its mobile device management. When an employee switches the device on, it loads this configuration and sets itself up as a company device without any manual steps. This also happens again after a factory reset.
| Method | Platform |
|---|---|
| zero-touch enrollment | Android (Android Enterprise) |
| Knox Mobile Enrollment | Samsung |
| Automated device enrollment via Apple Business Manager | Apple |
| Windows Autopilot | Windows |
What to note when retiring devices
Automatic enrollment is practical in operation but an obstacle when reselling. Before handing over, you should release the device from the zero-touch configuration or account, remove it from the MDM and erase the data. For Samsung devices, the same applies to Samsung Knox. Our guide offers a checklist for company phones retiring company phones. Second IT erases smartphones and tablets with Blancco and issues a digitally signed erasure certificate for every device.
Frequently asked questions about zero-touch enrollment
What is the difference between Android Enterprise and zero-touch?
Android Enterprise is Google's overall program for company devices. Zero-touch is one way of registering devices in it automatically.
Is a factory reset enough to release a zero-touch device?
No. After the reset, the device queries the zero-touch configuration again and reconnects to the company. The assignment must be removed in the account.
Who can remove the assignment?
The company in its zero-touch or management account, or the reseller who assigned the devices.
What comparable methods exist for Samsung, Apple and Windows?
At Samsung, the method is called Knox Mobile Enrollment. Apple uses automated device enrollment via Apple Business Manager, Windows uses Autopilot. All of them automatically integrate company devices into management and must be released before resale.
What must I do before selling a zero-touch device?
Release the device from the zero-touch configuration or account, remove it from the MDM and erase the data. Otherwise the device will register with the old company again even for the new owner.
