Schnellformatierung

In brief

A quick format creates a new, empty file system on a data carrier without overwriting the stored data itself. The drive then appears empty, but the old contents can often be recovered with recovery programs. For passing on or disposing of data carriers, a quick format is therefore not a secure erasure method.

Quick format, full format, and erasure

Process What happens Data recoverable?
Quick format New management structures, data area remains unchanged Often yes
Full format On Windows, since Vista the sectors are also overwritten with zeros For HDDs usually no, but hidden areas remain untouched
Certified erasure All areas are covered, the result is verified and documented No, with documentation

On SSDs, a quick format can cause the operating system to report free blocks via the TRIM command. Whether and when the SSD actually empties them is decided by its controller. No proof results from this.

Why formatting isn't enough

Data that remains after formatting is called Data remanencedata remanence. Only methods that cover all storage areas are secure, such as Overwriting or firmware commands, or destruction. Why formatting and factory reset are not enough is explained in our guide Securely erasing hard drives and SSDs.

Second IT erases data carriers with Blancco, including hidden areas such as HPA and DCO, and creates a digitally signed erasure certificate for each device.

Frequently asked questions about quick format

Is the data gone after a quick format?

No. Only the management structures are created anew. The contents usually remain until they are overwritten.

What is the difference between formatting and erasing?

Formatting prepares a data carrier for use. Secure erasure removes the data verifiably from all areas.

Is a full format enough for a sale?

Not for companies. Hidden areas remain untouched, the method works unreliably on SSDs, and there is no proof for each device.

What is data remanence?

Data remanence is the term for data that remains on the data carrier after formatting or erasing. It is removed securely only by methods that cover all storage areas, such as overwriting or firmware commands, or by destroying the data carrier.

How does a quick format work on SSDs?

The operating system reports free blocks to the SSD via the TRIM command. Whether and when the SSD actually empties these blocks is decided by its controller. No proof results from this. It is therefore unsuitable as an erasure method for companies.

Not just formatted, but erased with certification – with documentation for each device.
