Direktfahrt
In brief
A direct run is a transport in which the goods are driven straight from the pickup location to the destination without transshipment, without intermediate storage and without additional loads for other customers. In logistics, it is the fastest and most controllable mode of transport. When transporting retired IT hardware, it reduces the risk of data carriers being lost along the way or becoming accessible to unauthorized persons.
Direct run and groupage transport
| Feature | Direct transport | Groupage or part-load transport |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Pickup location straight to destination | Via transshipment points and depots |
| Transshipment | No | Possible multiple times |
| Goods of other customers in the vehicle | No | Yes |
| Traceability | High, especially with tracking | Depends on the scans at the transshipment points |
| Costs | Higher per shipment | Lower per shipment |
In general usage, a direct run is booked with a courier or freight forwarder for urgent or valuable shipments. For retired IT, a third reason is added: protecting the data on the devices.
Why direct runs matter for data carriers
Every transshipment point is a link in the Chain of custody, where devices can be mixed up or disappear. A direct run shortens the chain to two handovers: at the customer's site and at the destination. Combined with sealing and GPS tracking it is a core building block of a secure transport.
Second IT picks up IT hardware with its own Security logistics : direct runs without intermediate storage, GPS monitoring, tamper-proof sealing and insured transport. The seals are only removed in-house in Schwäbisch Hall.
Frequently asked questions about direct runs
Is a direct run the same as a courier?
Not necessarily. Many courier services drive directly, but some consolidate shipments. What matters is that no transshipment and no intermediate storage take place.
When is a direct run worthwhile?
For larger quantities, for sensitive data and when seamless evidence is required. For individual devices, secured shipping may be sufficient.
How is a direct run documented?
With a handover record, seal numbers, tracking data and a receipt record at the destination.
Direct run or groupage transport: which is safer?
The direct run. Every transshipment point is a link in the chain of custody where devices can be mixed up or disappear. A direct run shortens the chain to two handovers: at the customer's site and at the destination.
Which measures turn a direct run into a secure transport?
Above all sealing and GPS tracking. The seal shows whether a container has been opened, and tracking shows where the vehicle was. Together with a handover record, they are a core building block of a secure transport.
