Neutralisierung von IT-Hardware

In brief

Neutralization of IT hardware means removing all features that associate a used device with its former owner, such as inventory stickers, asset tags, engravings, company logos or stored company settings. It complements data erasure: the data is then gone, and externally nothing reveals the origin anymore. Neutralization is a common step before decommissioned devices are resold.

What is neutralized

Area Examples
On the outside of the device Asset tags, inventory stickers, hostname labels, engravings, stickers with hotline numbers
Firmware and settings Company logos at startup, identifiers in the BIOS, BIOS passwords
Management Bindings to MDM, Autopilot or manufacturer accounts
Devices with a display Company name or address book on printers and phones

Some bindings can only be released by the handing-over company, such as unenrolling from management systems. The manufacturer's serial number, by contrast, stays on the device, because it is part of its identity and needed for warranty and proofs.

Why neutralization matters

A sticker with your company name on a resold laptop reveals where the device comes from. This can raise questions or make attacks easier, for example if hostnames allow conclusions about your network. Before neutralization, you should record asset tag and serial number together, so that the erasure and destruction proofs in the Chain of custody can be assigned.

At Second IT, all delivered devices are checked for customer identification features and these are removed completely. As a result, the origin cannot be traced back to you. More about Data security at Second IT.

Frequently asked questions about neutralization

Do I have to remove asset tags myself before handover?

Not if your service provider handles the neutralization. However, record the identifiers in your device list beforehand.

Is the serial number also removed during neutralization?

No. The manufacturer's serial number is retained. It identifies the device in erasure and destruction proofs.

Is neutralization the same as data erasure?

No. Data erasure removes stored data, neutralization removes external and technical features that point to the previous owner. Both belong before a resale.

Why is a company sticker on a used device a risk?

The sticker reveals where the device comes from. This can raise questions or make attacks easier, for example if hostnames allow conclusions about your network. That is why such features are removed before resale.

Which bindings do I have to release myself before neutralization?

Some bindings can only be released by the handing-over company, such as unenrolling from management systems like MDM or Autopilot and the link to manufacturer accounts. External features such as stickers and engravings, by contrast, can be removed by a service provider.
