Akkuzustand (Battery Health)

In brief

Battery health indicates how much capacity a battery can still store compared with its new condition, usually as a percentage. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with every charge cycle and with age. For used laptops, smartphones and tablets, battery health is an important factor for usability, condition grading and price.

How battery health is measured

The current full charge capacity is compared with the original rated capacity. Charge cycles also count: one cycle corresponds to one full discharge, spread across any number of partial charges.

Device Where to find the value
iPhone Settings, Battery, Battery Health
Windows laptop Battery report via the command "powercfg /batteryreport" with rated and current capacity
Mac System Information, Power, with cycle count

Manufacturers state guideline values. Apple, for example, states that iPhone 15 batteries should still retain around 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles; for older models Apple stated 500 cycles.

Meaning for used devices

A weak battery lowers the rating in Grading and thus the value. However, it is often no reason to dispose of a device, because batteries can be replaced in many models. The measured value belongs in the test report of a refurbished device. How company phones are retired with regard to data, locks and value is shown in our guide retiring company phones.

At Second IT, batteries are among the components that are tested, refurbished or replaced during refurbishment. More on repair and refurbishment.

Frequently asked questions about battery health

When should a battery be replaced?

Many manufacturers regard around 80% of the original capacity as the limit beyond which replacement makes sense. What matters is whether the runtime is still sufficient for the intended use.

What does battery health of 85% mean?

The battery can still store 85% of the energy it could store when new. The runtime is correspondingly shorter.

Does a weak battery lower the resale value?

Yes, usually. If the battery is replaceable, the value can be restored by replacing it during refurbishment.

How do I check battery health on iPhone, Windows laptop and Mac?

On the iPhone, the value is under Settings, Battery, Battery Health. On a Windows laptop, the command "powercfg /batteryreport" generates a battery report. On a Mac, System Information under Power also shows the cycle count.

What is a battery charge cycle?

One cycle corresponds to one full discharge, spread across any number of partial charges. Manufacturers state guideline values: Apple states for the iPhone 15 that the battery should still retain around 80% of its capacity after 1,000 cycles.
