Reparierbarkeitsindex
In brief
A repairability index (also repair index) is a metric that indicates how easily a product can be repaired. Assessed are, for example, ease of disassembly, availability and price of spare parts and access to repair information. In the EU, smartphones and tablets have carried a repairability class on the energy label since June 2025. For companies, the metric helps to procure devices with a longer service life and better resale value.
Well-known labels (as of 10/2026)
| Label | Scope | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| EU energy label for smartphones and tablets | EU, since June 20, 2025 | Repairability class A to E, plus information on battery endurance and robustness |
| Indice de réparabilité | France, since 2021 for selected product groups | Score from 0 to 10 |
France has meanwhile partly developed its system further and replaced it with a durability index for individual product groups. For smartphones and tablets, the EU label applies. Further product groups can follow via the Ecodesign Regulation . The rules are constantly evolving, which is why a date of status is given here.
Significance for companies
Easily repairable devices can be used longer, repaired more cheaply and remarketed better. This supports sustainability goals and lowers total costs. In addition, the Right to repair obliges manufacturers of certain product groups, including smartphones and tablets, to repair their products even after the warranty period has expired. In Germany, the implementation has applied since July 31, 2026. More on a long-lasting IT strategy in the article Sustainable IT strategy against throwaway culture.

Frequently asked questions about the repairability index
Is there a repair index of its own in Germany?
No, not a national one. In Germany the EU labeling applies, currently mainly for smartphones and tablets (as of 10/2026).
What does repairability class A mean?
That the device is very easy to repair according to the EU criteria. E is the worst class.
Does the index also apply to notebooks?
The EU label so far covers smartphones and tablets. For notebooks, a label depends on future ecodesign requirements.
By what criteria is repairability assessed?
Assessed are, among other things, ease of disassembly, availability and price of spare parts and access to repair information. The result appears as a class or as a score, depending on the label.
What is the right to repair?
It obliges manufacturers of certain product groups, including smartphones and tablets, to repair their products even after the warranty period has expired. In Germany, the implementation has applied since July 31, 2026 (as of 10/2026).
