Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR)
In brief
Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) is a licensing program from Microsoft for large refurbishers who may deliver used PCs and laptops with a new, genuine Windows license. For this, the devices receive a special authenticity label with a product key. For buyers of refurbished hardware, this is proof that the preinstalled Windows is properly licensed.
How the program works
When a company PC is decommissioned, the Windows license is often tied to the previous owner, a volume agreement or the original device. A refurbisher can therefore not simply pass on the old system. In the MAR program, it receives discounted licenses for devices that already carry an earlier Windows certificate of authenticity (Certificate of Authenticity, COA). He reinstalls Windows and attaches a MAR label with a product key.
| Program | Target group |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) | Large refurbishers with high monthly volumes |
| Registered Refurbisher | Small and medium-sized refurbishers |
Significance for buyers and sellers
Anyone buying refurbished PCs should look for a traceable license: a MAR label, another valid license or a device without an operating system. Companies that hand over their old devices do not have to worry about this. They should, however, release accounts and bindings such as Autopilot registrations and have the data erased with certification. During Re-imaging a new, clean system is installed afterwards. What matters when selling used PCs after the end of Windows 10 is explained in the guide Selling used PCs. Second IT inspects, repairs and refurbishes devices and then markets them via online shop and store.
Frequently asked questions about the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher
How do I recognize a MAR device?
A special Windows authenticity label for refurbished PCs with the name of the refurbisher and a product key is stuck on the housing.
May I sell the Windows license with the old PC?
That depends on the license type. Preinstalled manufacturer licenses, volume licenses and subscriptions have different rules. If in doubt, a refurbisher passes the device on with a new, valid license or without an operating system.
Do I have to uninstall Windows before handing over the device?
No. What matters is a certified erasure of the data carrier. After that, the old system has been removed anyway.
Why can a refurbisher not simply pass on the old Windows?
The Windows license of a company PC is often tied to the previous owner, a volume agreement or the original device. That is why a refurbisher reinstalls Windows and delivers the device with a valid license.
What is the difference between MAR and Registered Refurbisher?
Both are Microsoft programs for refurbishers. Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) is aimed at large refurbishers with high monthly volumes. Registered Refurbisher is intended for small and medium-sized refurbishers.
