End of Support (EOS)
In brief
End of Support (EOS) is the point from which a manufacturer no longer provides support for a product, above all no security updates, bug fixes or technical help. The product continues to work but becomes less secure with every newly discovered vulnerability. For companies, EOS is often the trigger to replace hardware or software.
EOS, EOL and End of Sale
| Term | Significance |
|---|---|
| End of Sale | The product is no longer sold |
| End of Life (EOL) | The product's life cycle ends, often used as an umbrella term for end of sale and end of support |
| End of Support | No more updates and no more help from the manufacturer |
Manufacturers do not use the terms uniformly. The life cycle information of the respective manufacturer is decisive.
What to do after end of support
Anyone who keeps operating systems without security updates takes a growing risk. Typical routes are an upgrade, a paid extension, a different operating system or replacement. One example is Windows 10: Microsoft ended regular support on October 14, 2025. Devices without Windows 11 eligibility often fail because of the processor or a missing TPM 2.0. What this means for the sale is shown in our guide Selling used PCs after the end of Windows 10.
End of support on your side does not mean a device is worthless. With a different operating system or as a source of spare parts, it can continue to be used. Second IT buys retired devices, erases all data with certification and prepares them with current operating systems.
Frequently asked questions about End of Support
May I keep using a device after end of support?
Technically yes. Without security updates, however, the risk increases. Check whether this is compatible with your security requirements.
What is the difference between EOL and EOS?
EOL describes the end of the product life cycle, often beginning with the end of sale. EOS denotes the end of updates and manufacturer help.
Do devices still have value after end of support?
Often yes, although lower. They can continue to be used with other software or supply spare parts.
What does the end of support for Windows 10 mean for company PCs?
Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Since then there have been no regular security updates. Devices without Windows 11 eligibility often fail because of the processor or a missing TPM 2.0 and must be replaced or operated differently.
What can I do when a product reaches end of support?
Typical routes are an upgrade, a paid extension of support, a different operating system or replacement of the hardware. Which solution fits depends on your security requirements. The manufacturer's life cycle information is decisive.
