Marktwertermittlung für Gebrauchtgeräte
In brief
Market value assessment for used devices is the evaluation of what price used IT hardware can achieve on the market at a given point in time. It takes into account model, configuration, condition, quantity and current demand. For companies, it is the basis for deciding during decommissioning whether a sale is worthwhile and which offer is fair.
What determines the market value
| Factor | Examples |
|---|---|
| Model and generation | Processor generation, business or consumer series |
| Equipment | Memory, SSD size, display, keyboard layout |
| Condition | Appearance and function, rated by Grading, for mobile devices also the battery condition |
| Completeness | Power supplies, accessories, built-in data carriers |
| Blocking | BIOS password, MDM binding, Activation Lock |
| Quantity and timing | Uniform lots, market demand, age at the time of sale |
Market value, residual value and book value
The market value is a price that buyers pay today. The residual book value, by contrast, is an accounting figure and declines according to fixed rules. A fully depreciated laptop has a book value of zero, but often still a market value. How the two values relate is explained in the entry Residual value of IT hardware. Which values are held in decommissioned hardware is shown by our article These values lie dormant in your hardware.

Frequently asked questions about market value assessment
What details do I need for a market value assessment?
Manufacturer, model, processor, memory, storage, condition and quantity. A list from your inventory is usually enough as a basis.
Why does the market value differ from the book value?
The book value follows tax depreciation rules, the market value follows current demand. The two have nothing to do with each other.
Does the market value fall when devices sit in storage?
Generally yes. With every month, the devices become older compared with what is on offer in the market. An early sale usually brings more.
How is the condition of used devices assessed?
Appearance and function are classified into condition classes during grading. For mobile devices, the battery condition is added. Condition is an important factor for market value, alongside model, configuration, completeness and quantity.
Do locks such as a BIOS password or MDM affect the market value?
Yes. Locks such as a BIOS password, an MDM binding or an activation lock are among the factors that determine market value. Locked devices are harder to reuse. Therefore note locks already in your device list.
