Chromebook-Unternehmensregistrierung

In brief

Chromebook enterprise enrollment is the addition of a ChromeOS device to an organization’s Google management console. After that, the policies of the company or school apply to the device, and it can be managed centrally. If forced re-enrollment is active, the device automatically returns to management after a reset, which is why it must be explicitly released before handover.

How enrollment works

An administrator enrolls the Chromebook with an organization account in the Google Admin console. This generally requires an upgrade license for ChromeOS management. From then on, the organization controls sign-in, apps and settings. This is common in schools and companies. Similar procedures exist for Android with zero-touch enrollment and, in general, in mobile device management.

What to do before handover

Step Why
Deprovision the device in the Admin console, reason "Retiring from fleet" or decommissioning Removes policies and dissolves the binding to the organization
No longer apply forced re-enrollment to the device Otherwise the device signs in again after the reset
Reset the device with a Powerwash and have data erased verifiably Removes local data; the proof documents the erasure

A Chromebook that has not been released shows the new owner, during setup, a notice about management by your organization. Only your administrator can carry out the release. How this works for tablets and other managed devices is shown in our guide Selling tablets without an MDM lock.

Second IT erases released devices with certification, removes all markings of your organization and prepares them for further use.

Frequently asked questions about Chromebook enrollment

Why does a Chromebook sign in to the school or company again after a reset?

Because forced re-enrollment is active. During setup, the device detects that it belongs to an organization and connects to it again.

Who can remove a Chromebook from management?

Only an administrator of the organization in the Google Admin console. Buyers or service providers cannot do this.

Is a Powerwash enough for the sale?

No. It resets the device but does not dissolve the enrollment and provides no proof for each device.

What does it mean to deprovision a Chromebook?

The administrator removes the device from management in the Google Admin console, with the reason "Retiring from fleet". This makes the policies and the binding to the organization disappear. Only then can a new owner set up the device freely.

How do I tell whether a used Chromebook is still managed?

During setup, the device shows a notice about management by the organization. In that case the enrollment has not been released. Only an administrator of the organization can change this in the Admin console.
