B2B-Geräte nach ElektroG
As of: 10/2026
In brief
B2B devices, within the meaning of the ElektroG, are electrical and electronic devices used exclusively by users other than private households, such as rack servers or industrial equipment. Different take-back rules apply to their waste devices than to household appliances: they do not belong in municipal collection points but are disposed of via the manufacturer or a certified waste management company. Devices that can also be used privately, by contrast, count as B2C devices.
B2B or B2C – the delimitation
What matters is not who bought a device, but whether it can potentially also be used in private households. The ElektroG provides in § 3 No. 5: devices that can be used by both private households and other users count as waste devices from private households.
| Device | Classification |
|---|---|
| Laptop, PC, monitor, smartphone, tablet | generally B2C (dual-use), even if they are in the office |
| Rack server, storage system, large network cabinets | often B2B |
| Large copiers, specialized and industrial equipment | B2B or B2C depending on design and distribution |
The classification is determined by the manufacturer at registration with the stiftung ear .
Take-back and disposal
For B2B waste devices, the manufacturer must create a reasonable option for return under § 19 ElektroG. Manufacturers and users can make different agreements on the bearing of costs. The ElektroG was last amended on 1 January 2026. This entry does not replace legal advice. Your company remains responsible in any case for the erasure of data on the devices.
Second IT is a certified waste management company under § 56 KrWG, erases data carriers in a certified manner before recovery and supplies documentation for your CSR and ESG reporting. More on this in our guide Certified waste management company and ElektroG.
Frequently asked questions about B2B devices
Are company laptops B2B devices?
As a rule, no. Laptops can also be used privately and therefore count as devices from private households, even if a company bought them.
May I hand in B2B waste devices at the recycling center?
Municipal collection points are intended for waste devices from private households. You hand B2B devices to the manufacturer or a certified waste management company.
Do B2B devices have to be erased before handover?
Yes, if they store data. This applies to servers and storage just as to laptops. Have the erasure confirmed per serial number.
Are servers and storage systems B2B devices?
Often yes. Rack servers, storage systems and large network cabinets are mostly used only by companies and then count as B2B devices. The classification is determined by the manufacturer at registration with the stiftung ear. It depends on design and distribution.
Who bears the costs of disposing of B2B waste devices?
Under the ElektroG, the manufacturer must create a reasonable option for return. Manufacturers and users may, however, make different agreements on the bearing of costs. Therefore check your supply or service contract before handing over old devices.
